is starting the new year in mourning. a warrenton father leaves behind three grieving children and saddened neighbors. >> reporter: officer chris young was on his way to another call when this terrible crash happened right here behind me in bristow. it was really sad and hard for our families. the kids all played together. chris was always running around playing flashlight tag with the kids. always had a smile on his face. just a great guy. >> reporter: friends remember officer chris young. the married father of three wawr a motorcycle officer on his way to a crash driving on nokesville road around 2:00 p.m. new year's eve when police say this now charred minivan made a turn in front ever the 35-year- old killing him -- of the 35- year-old killing him in the line of duty. the crash was fiery leaving little to no chance of survive to the seven-year veteran of the force. his former neighbor didn't want her face on camera. >> a great neighbor, willing to

do anything, shovel your car of snow, help you if you needed anything. a great guy. >> reporter: the acting chief is asking for everyone's thoughts and prayers tonight as the entire department comes to grips with the loss after colleague and friend. we're here in bristow tonight, debra alfarone, 9news. police are looking for the person who shot out a window of a prince william county school. surveillance photo shows the suspect inside the elementary school on horner road in woodbridge. the shooting took place sometime friday night or early saturday. if you recognize the man you see in the picture right there on the right, you're asked to call police. today the first legal weddings between same-sex couples in maryland will take place. maryland voters agreed to legalize gay marriage in a statewide referendum two months ago. courthouse ceremonies will begin tomorrow when county governments reopen after the new year's day holiday.

since 2008 the redskins had to pack up their lockers after the final regular season game. a different story this time around. the nfc champs are getting ready for seattle this weekend instead. dave owens has more on the redskins improbable journey to the playoffs. surreal is a word folks have been throwing around. how did this happen? how did the redskins go from life supports to living, breathing? how did they win ten games? how did that phrase get flashed on the oversize stadium monitor? >> you talk about character and put character with people who have ability and a team that plays together, you have a chance to do some special things. >> how did one rookie with two good legs and another one with only one carry this team rushing wise to a place it's never seen before? how? >> the team that can run the

good morning once again. olga breese in for howard bernstein. we have overcast skies. everyone sitting above freezing. we're starting to see a little bit of a dip. great falls down to 30 degrees. we'll keep the overcast skies and a couple of sprinkles. winds out of the west. highs will be chilly only making it into the lower 40s projecting a high of about 42 to 44 degrees at reagan national today. back to you. >> thank you, olga. at 4:40, time for the first your money segment of 2013. >> wow. got to get used to saying that and writing it, too. good morning, jessica doyle. >> good morning. a hope for a deal on the fiscal cliff delivered a nice rally on wall street on the last day of trading of the year. the dow posted a 7% gain for the year. checking the numbers, the dow starts tomorrow because it's closed today at 13,104, surged 166 points or 1.38%.

that gain broke a five-day losing streak and marks the biggest rally on the final day of the year ever. the nasdaq was up by 59 points or 2%. the s&p 500 added 23 points. 1.7% for the year. the dow rose 7.3%. the technology hag nasdaq up by 16 -- having nasdaq up by 16% a strong gain there. the broader s&p 500 climbed by 13%. the unction has hit its debt -- the united states has hit its debt limit. as a result, the treasury department is taking measures to buy time until the end of february. those moves include suspending some benefit funds. congress must vote to raise the debt ceiling setting the stage for another fight on capitol hill. some people wrapped up their 2012 by donating to charity. all day and night car after car dropped off in donations at the

salvation army center in alexandria. many people got in a final big donation before the end of the year for tax purposes of course. others gave away their old things to make way for new stuff santa brought them. >> a tremendous turnout with donations. again, you know, the salvation army does a lot across all over the world so people feel comfortable coming here with their donations and we take good care of the stuff that they donate. >> the salvation army estimates some 1700 cars came by its alexandria center yesterday alone. i've been giving to goodwill the last couple of days to get rid of stuff, get in the tax donations and it's the right thing to do. >> that place is huge. just pull in. >> on this last day of the year, it is unbelievable.

good morning. happy new year. welcome to 9news now. it is 4:45 this tuesday morning. howard is still enjoying his holiday. olga breese is in. and it's kind of mild on a cold side out there? >> it's mild for this time of the year. it's still cold out, though. our temperatures are in the 30s in a couple of places but most of us sitting in the 40s. we don't have a chance of any of that wintry stuff moving on through. i amtraking some moisture. that could bring us some

sprinkles throughout the day today. nothing heavy. no accumulation. no heavy downpours. you probably won't even need your umbrella. however, will you have to duck a few of those raindrops. right now, though, the cold is really the big story for the morning. if you're getting up early, have a few things to accomplish today, it's very quiet out right now but the temperatures are still dipping prior to sunrise. the only one area we're starting to see the numbers drop a little bit is out to the north and toward the west. great falls has already fallen to 30 degrees, but most of the other areas are in the lower to middle 30s. in fact, we're pretty warm inside the beltway 39. 36 for alexandria. 34 at college park. so that is basically the norm. overall today, we are going to keep cloud cover all day long. winds are going to be predominantly out of the west and then switching to the northwest but fairly light winds. calm this morning but about 5 to 10 miles per hour winds by late other this afternoon. as we get to that 9:00 hour, i think we move out of the 30s and closer to that 40-degree

mark. then by noontime, we've almost hit our high for the day. by noon, we'll be into the lower 40s. highs for reagan national should be about 44 degrees today. 42 to 44. that's pretty much what we're going to sustain headed toward the sunset hour. as we get in toward the later portion of the day, our westerly winds are going to turn more from the north. that means we're going to be very cool, a cold night ahead for us tonight. visibility is fantastic. nothing to worry about on that concern. i normally don't pull up the dew points but i want to show you how much cooler and drier the air is becoming. we're starting to pull in some of the arctic air of the north. it isn't going to give us a blast but keep us in a winter like pattern the next several days. although the temperatures are well into the 30s and the 40s along the coast, it's feeling much cooler than that because of just a very, very light breeze. here how the moisture is progressing toward us. we're popping some showers and thunderstorms mainly across kentucky, tennessee headed in through west virginia. higher elevations are seeing

some of that snowfall but for most of us, this is just going to be some passing rain. the bulk of it goes to the south. most of us won't need the umbrella at all today but a few of us will have to duck by some of the sprinkles. as we head into your wednesday morning forecast, getting back to work, not too bad. we clear things out and a lot of sunshine is in store for tomorrow and even headed in toward the end of the week. we keep most of the moisture away until we get to thursday into friday. that's when i'm tracking the opportunity for a wet snow flake to move on through and at least for that cloud cover to return. so the forecast for today you just need to know we'll be into the lower to middle range 40s. keeping it cooler up toward the north. a little warmer down toward the south. tonight it's going to be a little bit chilly. we're down into the 20s. so bundle up if you're headed out early on wednesday morning. forecast for wednesday looks great. mostly sunny skies, cool temperatures, though. struggling to hit 38. we'll be around 40 for thursday. by friday and into saturday, we're still dealing with that chill and some very, very

frigid overnight lows down into the middle range 20s. for saturday not too bad. the weekend starts out partly cloudy. we're very good for the redskins game on sunday but it will be cool. high only about 40. mike, andrea? >> thank you, olga. doctors say they expect secretary of state hillary clinton to make a full recovery, even though the blood clot they discovered is near her brain. >> she's being treated at new york presbyterian hospital. the clot was discovered while doctors were following up on that concussion the 65-year-old suffered last month. bigad shaban has more on mrs. clinton's condition and her treatment. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton has a blood clot behind her right ear in a vain between her -- vein between her brain and skull. the blood clot did not result in a stroke or neurological damage. >> it is not affecting the brain tissue itself. having said that, if the clot obstructed blood from draining out of her brain, her brain would swell and become damaged.

>> reporter: doctors say it's key to stabilized clot. they're treating it with blood thinners. >> it prevents that clot from getting larger. >> reporter: the 65-year-old suffer add concussion earlier this month after she fell at her home. she's also being monitored for other conditions related to her concussion. >> sometimes when people have a condition cowtion, they have some -- concussion, they have pretty bad headaches. >> reporter: depending on the severity of the concussion, symptoms can last a couple of weeks. clinton's doctors say she's in good spirits engaging with her family and staff and is making excellent progress. bigad shaban, cbs news, los angeles. >> some of the risk factors for blood clots include prolonged bed rest. that's when you can get them or sitting for long periods of time or being older than 60, pregnancy and smoking. 4:51 now. the fda has approved the first new drug to fight tuberculosis in more than 30 years.

sirturo manufactured by johnson&johnson has been until now a drug resistant of tb. the fda approved the drug in only six months and are citing a potential threat to public health as the reason n. 2011 more than 9,000 people -- 9 million people got sick with tb. a study in the annals of internal medicine found patients who received a high dose of vaccine to the flu received a strong immunity. scientists at the state university of new york found children who grew up during times when unemployment rates were high were more likely to drink, smoke, and use marijuana in their teens. researchers suggest doctors consider their study when dealing with kids born during the most recent recessions. and if you partied too hard

corporal alex polley returned from a shopping trip to discover the front door ever his parents' home kicked in. he caught a burglar red handed holding jewelry and hunting gear. he just finish add tour in afghanistan. when he was standing there with a burglar, his military training kicked in. >> when i took him to the ground, it kind of kicked in to put him in a headlock and a choke and as i put my knee on his head, i mean, it's just -- everything kicked in. >> of course it did. he sat on top of the man till police arrived five minutes later. the suspect is now facing criminal charges. playboy mogul hugh hef anywhere is starting the new year 2013 as a married man once again. the 86-year-old hefner wednesday 26-year-old crystal harris at the playboy mansion late last night. harris already changed her last name to hefner on her twitter page. the two were supposed to originally tie the knot back in
